The Capturing and Managing of Injuries On Duty (IODs)
The Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act 130 of 1993 intends:

To provide for compensation for disablement caused by occupational injuries or diseases sustained or contracted by employees in the course of their employment, or for death resulting from such injuries or diseases, and to provide for matters connected therewith.

  1. Is to inform employees who are injured on the job, regardless of their severity to report it within 24 hours to the relevant officials and to provide procedures concerning reporting.
  2. It also outlines the steps to be taken when an employee is reassigned to a different supervisor while recovering from an injury.
  3. The DPSA provides employees with injury-on-duty leave with pay when an employee is unable to work, due to an accident or illness directly related to their job or worksite. Injury on-duty leave without pay is provided to cover extended periods of absence due to injury.

Content of SOP

The task/process to be undertaken;

  1. Details of any legislative requirements that are appropriate and have been considered in the safe operating procedure, e.g. for high-risk tasks, forklift operations, confined space entry, hot works, etc.
  2. Definitions of any specialized or unusual terms.
  3. Specific information regarding the potential hazards and associated risks of the task.
  4. Precautions required to eliminate or adequately control the risk before commencing the task, such as isolation procedures, ensuring guarding is in place, communication procedures, etc.

A health and safety policy is a written statement of principles and goals embodying the company’s commitment to workplace health and safety. There are no hard and fast rules about what to include in a policy. The employer should create a policy that is suitable and sufficient to address the health and safety need of the company.

The primary objective of a health and safety policy should be to prevent or reduce work-related accidents and occupational diseases. An appropriate policy could help to avoid the expense, inconvenience, and other consequences of workplace accidents by making sure that employees and other role players know what is expected of them.
